Review of Marketing Piece-What should be considered?

When reviewing a marketing piece, what are the things that you should consider?   A few examples of a marketing piece include (but are not limited to):

  • websites (including the blogs posted on the website)
  • newsletters (including email newsletters)
  • business cards
  • social media sites (including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
  • reprints of articles published in any periodicals

When reviewing these and other types of  marketing items consider the following:

  • no testimonials are allowed
  • any graph, chart, or formula used in the marketing item must be sourced
  • do not include any statements that can be deemed false or misleading
  • do not include language that creates the perception of a guarantee
  • do not include language that cannot be proven (use of the term unbiased, for example)
  • do not misstate facts about the firm services, assets under management, or level of expertise
